Hi! I’m Liv, a qualified professional animal trainer and founder of Hoof & Claw, with a passion for canine and equine science and a modern, ethical, welfare-first approach to training.
I’ve loved animals for as long as I can remember, growing up surrounded by dogs, horses, cows, sheep, bunnies, chickens, birds and even a pig, and that early obsession never went away.
After more than 10 years working at the University of New England, becoming a mum to two beautiful kids pushed me to finally follow my heart and dive headfirst into animal behaviour and training.
Since 2022, I’ve spent countless hours studying science-based training and welfare, exploring paths to pursue from veterinary nursing to behaviour, and discovered my true passion lies in helping families cut through confusing, outdated methods and build kinder, clearer relationships with their animals.
Qualifications
I hold a Diploma of Equitation Science from Equitation Science International, an internationally accredited program that applies learning theory and evidence-based practices to horse training and welfare. I am also close to completing the nationally recognised Delta Institute Certificate IV in Animal Behaviour and Training, one of Australia’s leading qualifications for rewards-based, positive reinforcement trainers.
Professional memberships
Staying current with science and best practice is incredibly important to me, so ongoing education and professional membership are a big part of my work. I’m a current member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC), which supports ethical, evidence-based training.
Ongoing learning
I’m also part of the Animal Training Academy community, where I learn from world-class trainers working with a huge range of species, from dogs and horses to bears, lions, elephants and even fish, all using the same ethical, science-based methods I bring to my clients.
Additional certifications/resources
I have completed the L.E.G.S. ® Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation® Course, a science-based program that looks at each dog through the lens of Learning, Environment, Genetics and Self to better support dogs and their families. This framework is always in the back of my mind when meeting a new dog or helping clients with behaviour concerns.
Training philosophy
My work is grounded in rewards-based training that helps animals learn desirable behaviours without pain, fear, or unnecessary stress, using well-established learning theory.
If you can train an animal without hurting them, forcing them or causing fear or confusion, then why wouldn’t you?
